Turnarounds capture some of the essence of the signature Blues sound and give a Blues progression an undeniably smooth start or ending. If you want to play Blues, you have to know turnarounds and this lesson will teach you four cool sounding ones.
What is a turnaround?
A Turnaround is very simply a Blues intro or ending to a song. It's a short lick of one measure that is played at the end of a blues progression. A blues guitarist playing the regular 12-bar blues will kick off the song with a turnaround and repeat it at the end of the progression (During the 12th bar). As you learn it now and listen to the videos, chances are that you'll recognize it when it shows up.
Four Turnaround Licks
Here are four very common turnaround licks that you'll use in your blues rhythm playing. The licks increase in difficulty the further we go along with number one being the easiest.
