How to tune a guitar by ear - without using an electronic tuner.
STEP 4 - The Fourth (or G) String
Place the first finger of your left hand on the fifth fret of the 3rd string. This is the G note - the same one the next string needs to be. Keep your finger there and gently pluck the 3rd and 4th strings and adjust the 4th string until the two sounds the same.
STEP 5 - The Fifth (or B) String
Place the first finger of your left hand on the fourth fret of the 4th string. This is the B note - the same one the next string needs to be. Keep your finger there and gently pluck the 4th and 5th strings and adjust the 5th string until the two sounds the same.
STEP 6 - The Sixth (or E) String
Place the first finger of your left hand on the fifth fret of the 5th string. This is the E note - the same one the next string needs to be. Keep your finger there and gently pluck the 5th and 6th strings and adjust the 6th string until the two sounds the same.
STEP 1 - The First (or E) String
The thickest string on the guitar normally stays in tune. If you don't have a tuner, start with this string and get it as close to E as you can. You can use a piano - the 1st string needs to sound the same as the 1st E below middle C (see picture). If you have no instrument nearby, don't worry too much since, like I said, this string almost always stays in tune.
STEP 3 - The Third (or D) String
Place the first finger of your left hand on the fifth fret of the 2nd string. This is the D note - the same note the next string needs to be. Keep your finger there and gently pluck the 2nd and 3rd strings and adjust the 3rd string until the two sounds the same.
STEP 2 - The Second (or A) String
The 1st string now becomes your reference. Place the first finger of your left hand on the fifth fret of the 1st string. This is the A note - the same one the next string needs to be. Keep your finger there and gently pluck the 1st and 2nd strings and adjust the 2nd string until the two sounds the same.
